I had tried a slew of techniques but never combined any of them together. So I was inspired to merge positive affirmations, subliminal messaging, brain wave entrainment and a process called hypnopedia...or sleep programming.

Human beings are creatures of habit. In fact, recent studies done by neuroscientists have shown that up to 95% of our daily activities are habitual and controlled by the subconscious mind.

Think about it. How much conscious attention do you place on walking, talking, eating, driving, writing, taking a shower, or even the work you do?

Their subconscious mind is doing most of the work. I’ll use a very simple example to illustrate just how unconscious much of what we do really is. When someone walks up to you, smiles and puts their hand out, do you pause and think, “Oh, they want me to shake their hand. Ok, I’ll do that.” Or do you automatically put your hand out to shake theirs?

There is no conscious thought involved, right? You just react. This is because your subconscious mind has learned that the stimulus of “person extends hand” is supposed to be matched with the response of “I extend my hand and shake other person’s.” It's a habit.

Habits are actually very useful things because the conscious mind is only capable of doing one thing at a time so the subconscious is designed to be an assistant to the conscious mind and handle all the complicated tasks that it can’t afford to focus on.

The problem is, the subconscious mind doesn’t think; it only plays pre-recorded programs. Take the example of shaking the person’s hand. The subconscious mind never considered if shaking that person’s hand was actually something you wanted to do. It just responded to a situation with the response it had learned.

The same is true with thought patterns. If you are used to focusing on failure, lack, scarcity, thoughts of not being good enough, feeling undeserving, etc. your subconscious mind will simply continue to play those patterns/tapes even if they are causing problems in your life.

And the worst part is you can’t just tell the subconscious to change programs. You actually have to install new ones. It’s like watching a video of a movie you really don’t like and yelling at the TV to play something else. No matter how loudly or how long you yell, the movie isn’t going to change until you put a new one in.

Change Your Life While You Sleep

Research has shown that the human brain operates in frequency cycles that range from:

Using three separate 10-person groups, one listened to a recording of 25 Chinese words and their correct English translations while they slept. Another group listened to a recording of the same 25 Chinese words but with incorrect English translations. The control group listened to only music while they slept.

The following morning each group was tested on their comprehension of the Chinese language. The group that listened to the recording of the Chinese words with the correct translations did significantly better than the other two groups. The observable data was significant enough to support the conclusion that learning can occur during sleep. [Fox, B., & Robbin, J. (1952). The retention of material presented during sleep. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 43, 75-79.]

This is important because it shows that new information can be added to your mind even if you are not awake and consciously focusing on that information. You really can make changes in your subconscious patterns while you sleep. In fact, this is the same mechanism behind hypnosis. When a person is hypnotized they are put into a state of deep relaxation and then given new thought patterns to replace old ones. But you don't need to be hypnotized to make powerful changes.
