Finding More Time in Your Life

Do you find that you never have time to do everything you want and need to do? Is it like you have a never ending list of projects that have to be done and as you finish one, two more join the list? If you answered yes, have you ever wondered why you never seem to be able to find time for yourself?
Now this might seem far fetched but bear with me. The reason you don't have enough time is because you hold a belief that tells you that free time or time to yourself is somehow undesirable. Let me explain a little further. If you were told when you were young that being busy and industrious was good and being "lazy", relaxing or having fun was something you shouldn't do very often, you now have a deeply rooted core belief that says you have to be busy and industrious as much as possible in order to be seen as "valuable" or "respectable". Do you remember being in elementary school and being graded on "using your time wisely"? When a substitute came in, weren't you usually given "busy work"? Over and over, you've been conditioned to think that not being busy is a bad thing. Now let me explain why you are forever adding to your list.
Have you ever bought a car and then a week later, as you're driving along, you get the impressioin that everyone on the road has the same car you do? And the even stranger part is, before you bought it, you hardly ever saw that type of car. What is happening here? Our brains contain something called the Reticular Activating System and it acts more or less like a "seek and find" system. Since your subconscious is now actively looking for your type of car because it needs to be able to identify it when necessary, it's "on the look out" for that type of car. Well, this applies to anything your subconscious deems important. So if you hold a belief that says you have to be industrious in order to be respected, your Reitcular Activating System is consistently "on the look out" for more things to do.
Don't get me wrong. Being industrious is good but not when it cuts so deeply into your life that you don't enjoy yourself. So what's the solution? Change how you think about being industrious. Would you agree that being healthy is a good thing? Would it be worth the time and effort necessary to make sure you live a better life? Yes? Then you'll want to include relaxation in your schedule. Study after study has shown that all work and no play doesn't just make you dull, it makes you unhealthy. Relaxation and stress reduction lead to a healthier, longer life and if you can take the perspective of using this relaxation to produce results (greater health) and not just being lazy, you might find it easier to work relaxation into your schedule.
