Limiting Beliefs and Starting Your Own Business
| 80% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years. This is a pretty discouraging statistic and if you hear or read this before venturing into your own small business, there's a pretty good change you'll set yourself up to join that 80%. Have you ever heard the expression, "Never tell me the odds"? I happen to like it because it's a good philosophy to follow. When we hear how hard it will be to accomplish something, a lot of us resign ourselves to failure. For instance, you might think "80% of small businesses fail. What makes me think mine will make it?". You were told the odds, you automatically grouped yourself with the majority (80% of small businesses fail) and decided your business would most likely fail, too. |
| One of the biggest problems in accomplishing any goal, including that of starting your own business, is a lack of confidence and faith in yourself and your idea. Who said your business would be in that 80% that fail? Isn't there a chance your business will end up in the 20% that succeed? Do you think the founders of McDonald's, Papa John's, Wendy's, Microsoft and all the other very successful businesses (all of which started as small businesses) started out knowing they would make it big? Well, yes and no and that is what I want to address in this article. No, they didn't have a guarantee that they would be the giants they are today. At the same time, though, they were so convinced that they had such a great product and the whole world would want it that they never wavered. The truth is nobody has ever succeeded in business or anything else by thinking about how likely it is they will fail.

| One simple yet very powerful way of helping yourself on the path to success is to overhaul your thinking. The more positive your thoughts and beliefs are, the more confidence you will have and the easier things will become. If you can make 80% of your thoughts about starting a business positive, you'll be doing yourself a huge favor. |
